Can't get out bearings?

1915 T rear end. Went to remove the rear wheel outter bearings and they will not come out . They feel like there is a ridge on the axel? Any help on this point would be much appreciated. Frank pkny

What you usually have is a ridge worn in the axel sleeve. It is normally on the top
portion of the sleeve where the bearing exerts the most pressure on the sleeve. Possible ridge on the axel too.Slip a close fitting length of pipe over the end of the axel with an assistant helping. Form 2 hooks from stiff wire and as the helper takes the pressure off the bearing try to jiggle it out. There is pressure on the bearing as you will see after you get it out. The axle will not stay centered in the hole but will move off center when the bearing is out. Takes quite a bit of force to hold it centered when replacing the bearing.

That is why I usually just hauled the whole thing out and cracked it half whenever I had a rearend problem. If you have enough wear to replace a bearing sleeve chances are there are other worn out replacable things in there like bearings and axles that may also need attention, and it never hurts to have a good look around inside. It's really not that much of a job and if you are careful the paint touchup in the end is easy. The other plus is that once the housings are cracked apart everything comes out really easily and reassembles with no effort at all. There is nothing worse than being broken down on the road, especially when you could have cured the problem at home before it happened.

Agree completely... when I rebuilt my 27's rearend, I found broken gear teeth in the bottom of the housing, and all the seals needed replacing... mine is 12 years younger than yours... I'd take this opportunity to rebuild it and the torque tube (driveshaft assembly)...

On the other hand I have a 23' Touring. Pulled the fluid out of the rear went in with a magnet then a set of mechanical fingers and got nothing out of the housing. The axels have no in and out play but I did replace the outter sleeves ( very slight wear)and installed new seals. I'm not one to look for trouble but if it looks OK it probably is OK.

I did get the bearings out today. and the sleeves. The sleeves looked very good no wear the end play on the axel is about 1/32 " is that ok to deal with?

The end play is OK. If you do replace the sleeves go for the better grade. Check out the modern inner seals they sell also. Used them on my 23'. You can tap the rivets on the roller cage ends with a center punch to tighten them up if needed. another thing. If you want you can remove the grease cups and run a 1/8" pipe tap in them and install zerk or grease gun fittings in them.Use 1/8" straight fittings and the cover will screw back on the cup looking totally original but much cleaner/easier to lube.

Thanks Friends you all are a great help. Very good infomation. Waiting for parts. The sleeves that were sent to me were marked right and left but they were both right side and the new style seals were to small in diameter to go on so they are sending me the larger size. I must say that Lang's are very good to work with nice people.
