Having a Bugger of a time trying to find the stamped VIN on the chassis. What am I missing? My Orig owners manual says 85 hp, the interior front floor is the rubber one Not carpet. I am tring to find out if the model is the 81 a or the 82?

Chassis number is in 3 places on top side of left frame rail. The front one is stamped as stated on top of frame rail close to steering box. The other 2 are under body one in center the other at rear by spring crossmember.

Thank you I cannot find the one near the steering box at all . I am told the engine # has the vin as well. ? I finally figured out what model I have, it's an 82A with the 85 HP engine

No the engine does not have a serial # There is one on top of transmission housing at front top is clutch inspection plate machined surface. Could help so load the transmission hasn’t been replaced.

The engine number is just a sequence number for the engine and may not be the one that was installed in the vehicle over time. Although, reading your other post about the vehicle it could be still the original engine.

Use care when looking for the frame number. It was not stamped very hard and sanding could remove it. Start with a good degreaser and a brass brush.

Try moving a little more "forward" of the steering box as well as a little more rear.....They were "punched" by humans AT "several" assembly facilities SO not uncommon to find "Human Error" in the location.

Ironically, I am finding the same "issue" on my 33, it has NO front end on it and I have found NO frame stamped number anywhere on the left frame rail from the cowl all the way to the very front of the frame.......NONE!!!!

Also, if the frame has been painted or power coated, it will mask/cover up the one near the steering wheel I had to scrap mine to bare metal to see it clearly (35 wagon). Its between the two frame bolts that hold the steering column bracket. It is centered on the frame plate.

Took a photo but can't figure how to post it ..

This 47 has the serial number forward of the front crossmember

Look forward of the steering box to the front crossmember. It's not always near the steering box. I used to do VIN verifications as a LEO and found many beyond the steering box location. The steering box location was common but not always. As a guess I think about 80% were near the box and 20% not. The later cars(41-48) were usually near the front crossmember.

Years ago I was trying to view the serial number on a 39 Standard Coupe that I had purchased. I just couldn’t seem to find the number in the usual steering box location. I was doing a complete tear down of the vehicle so everything was coming off. It wasn’t until I removed the hard line to the front brakes that I discovered it. The steel brake line was directly over the top of the stamping, preventing me from seeing it. I did see the same number on the other two locations so I knew it was the correct number for the chassis. The hydraulic line looked original so it was frustrating that they covered up an important identification device.

I have two 1937 frames, one has the engine number stamped right by the steering box mounting bracket, IMG_1919, the other is slightly rearward between the rivets and the edge of the frame, picture IMG_1917.
