Can I ask a computer question??

I'm getting pretty fed up with anything related to Bill Gates, so, I'm seriously looking at Apple [ Mac book pro].. If anyone has made a similar change I'd like to hear about it, positive or negative.. Playing a little bit with one just seems far more intuitive than any Windows versions I've used and I think I like the idea of not worrying about viruses and such stuff..And I'm not computer friendly.. Besides, it would look kewl in a Model A !! ;)

keep windows, you will be glad you did, my aunt had the same thoughts your having and bought an apple and hates the thing, hai it in a box and is now back to windows, if you dont like IE try mozzila or firefox for your browzer

Windows is GARBAGE. Dumped 6 computers for all MACS, in home and in the company and all networked, They work and work like they should NO Blue Screen of Death, NO Virus, NO Lockups and YES all the windows software is compatible despite what you are going to be told and mac will read all your files, The best part is Mac MAKES MAC.. No second rate companies that are gone in a year to make the computer. 1 company and 1 company ONLY makes MAC! Windows is old and done and is copying the interface much more, Look at the Ipod, Iphone, Ipad.. the best systems in the business. Go for it you will NEVER look back!

JMHO!!

Thanks for all the responses.. I'm now using a Dell with windows xp and mozilla Firefox.. As I stated I'm not that computer literate but I think this set-up, as the others before it, is a PITA.. Its interesting, but, the Apple folks also recommended the basic mac book[laptop] rather than the pro series.. I was thinking a 13" screen was too small so thats the only reason I considered the 15" pro..There is a considerable price difference between the two..I kinda like the fact that you buy into the whole company and everything it has to offer..

After spend hours every month keeping my parents pc working I MADE them but an iMac. They've had it for over 4 years with NO problems. The cost of admission is high, BUT the Apple computers have a longer usable life. I have bought used macbooks, used them for years, then gave them to my kid who are still using them. Ten years is not unreasonable to expect to keep an Apple computer working. You can usually see them at Apple stores, Best Buy sells them, or if you see someone using one at at coffee shop, ask if you can see it. Most Mac owners are evangelical about Apple computers.

Don't even think twice regarding buying a Mac, there is no comparison. Sure, you will have to pay a little more but then you are getting a much superior product without the Microsoft ills. My original computer was a PC and I was reluctant to make the switch. The transition was a piece of cake. You will put all your PC computer problems behind you with a Mac and never need to consider experiencing them again.

I have an E machine from Best Buy,did have Internet explorer now using Mozilla with Fire Fox,seems to work fine . Really user friendly, my wife had problems with Mac ,gets along ok now with mozilla. She has a Toshiba Sat.L455 Lap top we carry around with us on Trips, we have Verizon DSL Broad Band service at home and use a router can have several Puters goin at same time while using phone , sure is fast . Dial up is the pitts . For awhile we had AOL and got good service ,but seemed like it was hard to get shed of when we switched. Hope this helps .
Driving My 31 A this morn.and had to aoougha a few times ,amp meter went to discharge and stayed there ,got home and disconnected the horn wire at the horn, saw a spark ,amp meter returned to normal,I'll now have to run down the "short" . Just rambling .

I have installed Ubuntu and open office on several old PC's at work that were destined for the surplus pile, worked great.

Both software packages are free downloads.

One thing about macs: Like many popular high-end brands, they are never discounted. So you can buy it from any place that gives you good service, and not worry missing a better deal somewhere else. The corporate stores are a lot of fun to visit.

But for PCs, Windows 7 actually rather nice. I have it on my work and personal PC, and it gives me less trouble than even XP.

Patrick,

My 21 year old son loves his Mac book.... I still like to give him a tough time about it, as he runs Windows and a lot of Microsoft software on it.

Upon my retirement, I decided to stick with Windows and my new laptop with Windows 7 sure seems to be working well for me. I also picked up a nice Windows 7 laptop for my 12 year old daughter for only $298. I could not afford to buy 2 Mac books. Try them both out and see what makes you happy. Good luck whichever choice you make.

Almost true... All my macs are refurbs that I bought through the Apple online store. Go to an Apple store and check out the machine you're interested in in person, then order it online. Comes with Apple Care warranty and usually between 10-20% cheaper than retail new.

BTW, once you make the switch, you'll wonder why you waited.

Okay, I'm a machead for over 8+ years.

First of all MACS have viruses. Misconception. I will add though, not as many... as they are not as popular worldwide as a windows machine. So you are less likely, expectantly with a virus firewall (Integon virus protection suggestion), then a windows machine.

Apple has moved to a unix kernel (joining them Intel chips, previously windows , has partnered with apple). Using unix, (3rd popular basic language...dos, apple/darwin, unix, linux, there is more), has streamline the hardware. Consider it to be a "a to d" system. Instead of going through a ton of functions, it does functions that are needed only. I will add unix has been around for a long time with supercomputers, scientific research, military, etc...

I worked/operated with Unix and sgi systems ( http://www.sgi.com/ ) which are developed for one purpose only. In my case 3d animation and design. So I have a small knowledge but a big respect to it's architecture and have absolutely no affiliation or financial gain in suggestion them.

So in short.

PRO'S

It's an American company.

Solid system, easy to learn platform (really no difference from a windows system... adding Microsoft/windows has finally, as they like to control everything they do, offered it's products to run on mac).

Streamlined.

CON'S

No computer system is immune to virus

Cost. Getting better everyday, as more buy apple.

Apple store employees can be annoying :]' just kidding.

So I say, do it and not worry and I'll bet that you will like it.

I can think of no other topic of conversation that would bring as many sides to the discussion as the Model A as computers. In my 27 years in this business I have used every possible computation and permiation of the modern computer. A computer today running Windows 7 or Windows Vista is a great leap from the early days. The Mac has always had it spot in the business and in it's early days was the machine of choice for the graphics industry.
It is important to understand that when the comparison is made that a Mac doesn't get viruses like a Windows based machine does it it completly true. That's because a virus or malware writer who want's to infect 9 of 10 machines he will then write a virus to exploit the Windows Operating System. It is still the machine of choice for 9 out of 10 users. In the last 30 days Kapersky, Trend Micro, and Norton have all seen a 10 fold increase in the amount of threats targeted to the Mac audience. This argument won't hold for long with this type of increase.

In the last 4 years Apple has changed it's operating system to use the same components that the Windows based units do. Underneath they are the same. In fact the newest version of the Mac operating system uses the UNIX core which was developed in the early 80's.

If you feel more comfortable using a Mac I say go for it. You will pay a premium and the amount of available support is limited versus a Windows based pc. Find what works for you and that you are comfortable with and that will be the best choice.
