Can A cam be removed with engine in frame?

Yes, but it isn't easy. Besides the obvious, radiator, front cover, etc. the valve springs must be removed which means the head has to come off, with the side door off the lifters must be raised and held in the up position, clothes pins will work here. The gear assy. that drives the oil pump and dizzy must be removed, then the cam can slide out. The gear must also be removed from the cam or the pan lowered to clear the gear.

Those manifolds are going to be in the way so might as well remove them.

New, cam? You might as well use new lifters so remove the pan.

Remove the cam gear while the cam is in the engine or you'll never get it off.

Me thinks it's easier on an engine stand. Good luck.

I also use magnets to hold the lifters when pulling the cam. I agree that while you are at this point new lifters would be an easy add.

While you are at it, you would be advised to install new timing gears. Both camshaft and crankshaft. You can change the crank gear without removing the crankshaft, but you will need to un-bolt the mounts and raise the engine somewhat.

It is possible to replace the cam without removing the head, but you have to remove the valve keepers then raise them up with the springs there, then use your wifes bobby pins inserted through the spring coils to hold the lifters up. But I agree that if you are going the replace the cam, get new adjustable lifters. YOu can replace the lifters from the bottom but you need 3 long arms or a pal underneath. If you are doing that just pull the engine. Its a good time to check everything else while it is out.

Thanks for a the comments . My motor was rebuilt 4 years ago (2000 miles) . My front end is off and was just remenbering I had read some were that you could do a cam with out removing the engine. I want to send the cam to Jim for a regrind to go with the 6:1 head I have and was just trying not to take it out .
Thanks for the comments , may look into the adjustable lifters and the new gears

Talk to Jim B re lifters when you get the cam. You will need adjustables if the cam is not stock.
