Can a 1931 A have a 1929 engine?

Hi, last week I got my first A. Now I am a little bit confused about the engine. It's a Briggs Fordor 1931. The body number is 3732942. The engine number is A740629. This means, the engine is from decembre 1928. Sounds this Ok?
I am living in switzerland, I bought the car from denmark

Thank for any information.

Engines from 1928-1931 are essentially the same and are interchangeable. Few "A"s still have their factory installed engines

Actually. 1929 was the gangbuster year 9 (high production). 31 was low. so if you needed a replacement on exchange basis 29 might be the most likely.

Ok, but when I read the service bulletin, then there were a lot of changes for the engine.
Is there any explanation, what to change to make the 1928 engine a runner (more reliable).?

Willi, yes there were many running changes on the engine however these were very minor changes and would not prohibit using a typical Model-A engine in a different year model.

You also need to understand that an original Model-A engine was a very reliable engine from the factory. A rebuild engine that is properly rebuilt back within specifications is very reliable. A worn engine, --or, an engine that has been poorly rebuilt is NOT reliable.

My Canadian 31 Roadster has an engine that came out of a 29 tudor but has a 30 serial number on it. As CarlLaFong said, few A's still have their original engine. That being said, I would like to find my original engine to put back in the car. I put it in the 29 Tudor and sold it a guy that made a tractor out of it. That was in 1958 so probably long gone. The engine I am looking for is CAS1963 if anybody stumbles across it.

Got alot of respect for folks who do fine point restorations where matching numbers is critical..that being said, the only judging standard my car has to pass is mine

A lot of the European Model A's had an engine with a 3" bore and an AF engine number. Be thankful you don't have one of those, under powered and difficult to find parts for as not known in the USA. Often they have been changed for the larger engine like you have

Yes, I know, another very nice car was offered to me with this "small" european engine. I found it out and bought this one ;)

Actually the AF engine was not that bad . It produced 28 BHP at 2600 RPM . The downside was they fretted the timing wheel and the bits could block up the filter screen .So the engine stopped when the gear failed or lack of oil or both . I have an AF engine with a certain 76,000 miles family history from new out of a rodded tudor one owner . It had a cracked head and when I changed it I found standard bores and no ridge at the bore top .These engines are very smooth running compared to an A engine . You have to change down to 2nd gear on hills but my 28 phaeton will cruise happily at 40/45 MPH .When this engine dies I will put in a 24 HP B engine and change the 4.55 rear end to 3.27 or 3.54 .

A buddy of mine at work has a '29 coupe with a 2009 350 Chevy motor, with A/C, power steering and disc brakes, AM/FM disc player, tilt steering wheel, and big fat daddy tires and wheels.
So I guess anything is possible.
Why someone would do that is beyond me.
But too each his own.

Almost all model A's in Denmark had the small engine, when these engines died they bought the normal engine imported from another country but did'nt chance it on the title so they payed still the small tax.
My '29 tudor is also from Denmark and has a '30 engine out od a dutch model A.
Nothing wrong with that..........
