Cam nut removal

I have to replace the cam gear in my 28 but am having trouble getting the cam nut off. Is there any trick to it? I was told it was a pain but it is proving to be near impossible.

IF your cam nut isn't mangled you can buy a special "socket" for it from one of the parts houses. You should get one anyhow to put a nice new un-mangled cam nut. Barring that, a nice solid chisel and a big hammer will knock the old one loose.

If the cam is still in the engine use arag to jam between the gears to keep them from turning while you remove the cam nut. I've done a few that were really tight. They were cams from a swap meet with the gear still on. I clamped the camshaft between two boards in the vice and used an impact on the cam nut tool. Still had a lot of trouble getting it loose.

If your engine is in the car it's a bear of a job. Make sure you protect the radiator with a piece of cardboard. I had to use a Dremel tool with a cut off wheel and a chisel.

Another option is a large flat monkey wrench. Put it on with the handle side towards the radiator and the jaws on the nut. Be sure you can put it on the cam in a location that is usable for leverage. When all else fails, the chisel is mightier that the wrench. That's my experience.

I have a large open end wrench with an offset head thatwas made for removing the cam nut.Get the tool and avoid breaking parts.

A Model A buddy borrowed my "stock" cam socket that came from one of the supply houses. When I got it back it was "improved" with a weldment that deepened the 1/2" drive side. If you can do it yourself ... or if you know Phred ... this is a really nice betterment to an essential tool.

I got it off yesterday, turns out i was just being a little to gentle. Another local model a'er came over and used a bit of force. I guess i wasnt using a big enough hammer, being my first time doing it i didnt want to mess anything else up. Thanks for the suggestions.
