on the front surface of the block behind the big cam gear there are 2 little
cuts (grooves) in the thrust surface i assume for oil to lube this thrust surface..should the front cam bearing therefore be driven back a small amount to allow oil to feed to these grooves? ...1936LB....

When fitting the front cam bearing, install it so it is not proud of that thrust face. [obviously!] The grooves you refer to are indeed to allow oil to lube that thrust face; the relief valve located at front of valley has a small flat on it which allows oil to bleed off through the hole immediately above the top groove.

i llok up 'proud' one deffinition is 'protuding more than it's neighbor' so i assume you are stateing the front cam bearing is not supposed to stick out foreward beyond flush but is it supposed to be recessed back a little amount?
