Ok how do I get the cam out.... pulled yje back cover and theres 2 gears do I have to pull one.....also the oil pump isnt budging so theres got to be a trick to getting it out of there

thanks I hit it a couple of times and it didnt budge so I wanted to seel advice before I started yanking on it

Don't try to pry it out. I take a big pipe wrench, grab the pump (where the gears are) and maybe an extention to put on the pipe wrench, twist the pump back and forth, squirt some weasel pi-- around the bottom, when you can twist it easy try prying it up a little with a pinch bar while twisting. It will come. Walt

yep ron I have a batch mixed always....thats how I got this flathead tore down.....wish I could get a 50 gallon drum of the 50/50 mix and soak the hole engine
thanks for the advice Ill take a crack at it tomorrow as Im wore out from scrubbing flathead valve assembly's in the parts washer

I'd take the idler gear out to make cleaning easier. There's a tapped hole in the stub shaft it rotates on. Attach a slide hammer to the pin and knock it out. Very simple. JMHO. Good luck.

Ok thanks guys I now have the cam out and pulled the oil pump(wow did it have a bunch of crap in it when I pulled it) and tonight Im pulling the gear and off to the hot tank it goes.....thanks again for the insight

Aw, man, is that all you were talking about? I was hoping the formula somehow involved wild animal urine as the secret ingredient....What a disappointment.

Don't forget to remove the oil galley plug in the front behind the timing gear. It's a good idea to use a long narrow brush (ie rifle barrel brush) to clean out the tube. DO NOT FORGET to replace the plug on the rebuild.

The only way to properly clean this passage is to remove the fuel pump pushrod bushing so you can get a clear shot through the tube.
