C 4 ****** rebuild

My son acquired a '70 F100 pickup. It has a C4 ****** in it that is not shifting correctly. Kits to rebuild are available. I'm wondering if there are any special tools required to rebuild? If there is a manual on rebuilding one?
Thanks, Don

TCI has a lot of kits and components to make a C4 handle torque, they tend to be weak at the servo pistons. Anything over a 2500 stall and 350 HP starts to bust them up pretty good. TCI has a lot of install info available as well.

It will not suffer heavy use as a rod. Just moderate stress hauling a
boat on a trailer. I think the engine will be a 302. Still wondering if special tools needed. I rebuilt our 84 Camry automatic with no sweat except the manual and a kit. It required no special tools or measuring devices. Still wondering if the C$ requires special anything? Will get my son to get the DVD. Thanks

Make sure of no vacuum leaks and change the mogul they have adjustable ones for your shift.

Bossy, the vacuum modulator? You can change that to tune your shift vacuum, you have to get the right one for your year application. Unless you have a non stock converter or a cam that will affect your vacuum production you should not really need an adjustable modulator, they are relatively inexpensive , like 15 bucks. TCI has those too. I can't think of anything really special toolwise on a c4, just a good memory. I think I would put a cooler on a tow transmission in addition to the radiator ports, the heat is what kills them.
