Buzz coil location

I see from different pictures, some T's have the buzz coil located under the dash, with eight holes through the firewall. Some cars have a clean firewall, and the buzz coil seems to be mounted on the left side of the engine, probably bolted on to a bracket. Was this change of location related to a specific model, or was it a change done for all models from a given time?

There was actually 9 insulators off the dash mounted coil box. The 26-27 model was mounted on the engine. BTW... T lingo is "coils". ws

Thanks a lot! I'm going to pick up my project first coming weekend. Seller said he thought it was a 27, I now know from the 9 holes for the coils in the firewall this car is a 25 or older. I had already figured out the hood could not have been 1927 because of the few louvers, but you never know where all parts came from. It could be a mix of everything. Will be interesting to look for numbers on the frame, but if frame and firewall belongs together, frame probably will be clean. Small chances for the Canadian built engine to be the original one, so I guess identification could be a problem, I still hope I can work it out with the authorities in one way or an other.

The dead give away for a 26-27 engine are the two wide pedals and the two bolts at the top of the transmission into the block. Theres much more but at least thats the first obvious thing to look for. POST PICS!!! ws

Actually all the early (1909 thru 1918, and 1919-1922 without starter and generator) Model Ts had the ignition switch on the front of the coilbox and had 10 large holes thru the dash for porcelain insulated connections.
1919-1922 starter and generator cars and all 1923-1925 have 9 large holes in the dash.
1926-1927 cars have the coilbox on the cylinder head as has been pictured.
TT trucks used the old style dash mounted coilbox for 1926-1927.

Yeah, box was moved when the fuel tank came to roost under the dash. '26 I think. Sounds like a Heinz 57 car! Hope the DMV doesn't give you heart failure. There are actually ten 3/4" holes for coil box insulators in the steel firewall. Steel firewall: late 1923 (after April or May of that year I think). Wood firewall: early '23 and back to the beginning. As you probably know the engine # is usually the VIN with no frame #'s before '26. I had a '23 with a '26 eng./trans in it and the VIN was the '26 eng. # so it's possible to do. I didn't do it. The title came that way. Frame #'s I believe were on one of the frame rails under the front floor boards.

What was the 10th hole for? ws

Very interesting! From the firewall it then looks like my T is produced some time after April 1923, but not later than December 1925. (Could be even older if set up with starter and generator). Since the frame then is without numbers, it will be very interesting to see what the engine looks like. It was very dark and difficult to get to the engine, so I just had my arm with the camera inside there in the dark, all I could see was from the picture after the blitz had done its job. As you can see, pedals are in the dark. I will post more pictures over the weekend, after I have picked up the parts. Until then, thanks a lot to all of you!

the fan location is 1925 and earlier.if it is a 26-27 motor there should be two bolts on the top of the hogs to the block.

Good, liked to hear that, then the engine hopefully is about the same age as those other parts, will be exciting to take a look at the pedals. I had planned to go out there to pick up the parts today, but the seller had to go away for a couple of weeks. I probably will pick up the parts last weekend of February. Will be back with more pictures then!
