Buying a Rebuilt Engine ?

I'm looking for recommendations/warnings from anyone who has had experience with buying a ready to install rebuilt engine from any of the suppliers.

Any and all help is appreciated. I need a new engine for my 1917.

Thanks,
David

David;
You don't say where you are nor does your profile. If you are looking to keep it a 1917, why not get your engine rebuilt? For resale later; If I bought a 1917 I would want to see at least a correct and matching numbered block. Or is it too far gone? What are your mechanical abilities? Could you just get a short block done and do the rest your self? Unless you can find someone close the shipping charges are going to be up there shipping a complete engine two ways.

I agree, if your engine is matching the car it is the one to rebuild. If it has already been replaced (and many were) buying one outright would not be too much of a concern. If you could find one of the proper year for your car even better. If you buy one outright get instructions for break-in from the rebuilder and a warrantee.

Good points!

I am in Chicago. My car has a 17 block but it is not original to the car so I wouldn't mind replacing it with another correct year block. I thought the rebuilt engines for sale might speed up the process.

Thanks

David

I had mine rebuilt by snyders in Ohio, it was a 3 hour ride for me from the western end of NY so i personaly delivered and p/u . i was very impressed with the service and quality of the rebuild, i dealt with Don Snyder personaly and couldn't be more happy. i think if you strip it down to the shortblock it's UPSable, if you call, they'll fill you in on the best way to ship.

Do you know for sure you have a 1917 block? If you do have a 1917 block who ever does your rebuild or you get a rebuilt from will want your core anyway or there might be a high core charge. While the 1914 to 1919 pre starter blocks are not real rare, there isn't a huge supple like the later starter blocks.

I bought a spare motor for my 1919 non-starter a few months ago because I wanted something while I rebuilt the original motor. It is a complete 1926 motor with the starter and generator.

The guy that sold it to me put in .030 over aluminum pistons, new Kevlar bands, bushings in the trip gears, rebuilt coil ring, SS valves, and a new rear main. I saw it run on a test stand and he was kind enough to drive close to 60 miles to deliver it. He kept the timer -but that is not a big deal.

Without being specific -I paid less than $3,000

The 25 engine that came with my car developed a knock so I removed it and replaced it with a 23 engine until I can save enough dough to rebuild the 25 again.

I paid 1500 bucks for mine and it was delivered to me.

Miles will vary.

Contact Ray Goode at Dunbar Mfg, 380 N, Gilbert Street, South Elgin, Illinois 60177. Phone 847-741-6394. He is close enough to you to visit his shop. I have one of his rebuilt engines in my 1924 roadster and I couldn't be happier. He's a great guy to do business with.

Tell him David Martin sent you. (No, I don't get a commission)
