burned valve seat

I have one burned valve seat in my 29 Model A - all the rest are ok. Is there a way to grind the seat with the engine in the car? The burned section is about 1/4 wide. I tried lapping it with a new valve with a drill for about 20 minutes but didn't remove enough material to cure the problem.

David,

You will need a hard seat grinder. Place rags in the valve chamber to catch any grindings; when done flush the guide real good; you should be OK.
A couple of years ago one of our members had a couple of valves that were hanging up in the guides. He used valve grinding compound to hone the guides, flushed everything good. Never had any more problems.

Thanks for the quick response & info. So, I need a hard seat grinder. I assume that it's a specialty tool, sort of a drill motor that rotates a stone that rides on a spindle that fits into the guide. Where I can get such a device without having to buy it for a one-time use? Know any suppliers?

I'm replacing all the guides and valves. When I rebuild the engine I'll go with adjustable tappets as well, but that won't be for a while.
thanks

David

I suggest that you ask around and see if a local car enthusiast has the tools that you need, The tools are portable so there is a possibility that you could find someone to help. If you were in my area, a buddy of mine and I make those kind of "house calls" and we work for diet Cokes and cookies. It doesn't take long to repair a damaged seat with the correct grinding stones. If you know of any old independent garages in your area,, or even an aircraft repair facility at your local small airport.. They may have a valve grinder.. You can take the valves to them and they'll probably let you borrow the seat grinder and stones..Once you get the seat cleaned up, you'll need to narrow and position the seat.. You'll need 3 stones for that..

Rags in the chamber can also be supplemented with regular `O shaving cream also. Just an old engine builder trick from Ed Pink. Catches the shavings.
As for tooling you may be able to rent what is required. Or have the 'machinest' bring something over to your garage for the 40 or minutes it'll take.

skip.

Or tow it to a local machine shop. Make araingments before hand. It should not take more then 1/2 hr and take the guide with you, and then tow it back home and finish it up. Iceman
