Bumper jack

I have a 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 and am looking for a bumper jack like the original. Does anyone know if a Torino, mid-size Fairlane of the 1960s or Falcon use the same bumper jack as the 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958 Ford?

if you use one of those treat it like your life depends on it because it does, why do you want one of those? just for show, orginality? but one of the compact hydralic jacks if you plan on changing a tire

I have a 55 convertible my dad bought new and he threw the jack out a couple years later,he bought a tripod type jack to replace it and its still in the car. 15 years ago he came up with a original to put back in it but is for looks only.

I was just thinking of asking the same thing about a 52/54 Merc.. Not to use just for show. One on freebay but it's missing the hook.

The hydraulic bottle jack under the rear axle will not work for changing the rear tire on a 1957-1959 Ford. The car has to be lifted by the rear bumper high enough up so that the rear axle can drop down enough for the rear tire to clear the fender while being removed. I would only use the bumper jack in an emergency. And I have had a lot of emergencies over the last almost 70 years.

So I am going to throw you a curve ball, The 52-54 Fords have about the shallowest rear wheels so I found out after changing shocks that I could not get the tire back in :confused: the 1952-59 Fords all use the same Gabriel 81270 rear shocks so I removed one and compared it to the old OEM Ford shocks extended length the new shock was 1 1/2" shorter  so I added this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mrg-1290/overview/s: Problem solved! I passed this along on the 1952-59 Ford site on the HAMB that I moderate and we have found that KYB and Monroe also need the extensions.I jack up the car by the frame using a hydraulic jack just in front of the rear tire and everything clears.:D

That's good to know about the short shocks. I have new shocks on my 56 that were installed by the PO. I'll have check if I can get the tires off before I really need to.

put the hydralic jack on the frame not on the rear axle, then it works just like a bumper jack, only a lot safer

I had a heck of a time getting the rear wheels off my 56. I agree that the use of a hydraulic jack on the frame is the way to go. In my situation, I had the car on jackstands on the axle and couldn't believe how far I had to "stretch" the body to get the wheels on and off!

Have you posted an ad in the "Wanted" classifieds? You might want to post one on the HAMB too, because there is a lot of traffic there.
