Broken teeth 34 ******

Thanks Barners for your help, I now have ****** apart and have included a pic of the culprit! Thanks Old Henry, I ordered that book, it helped a bunch. Tim,Barry and Ken Alabama, all three of you mentioned you might have a used one . The count on the teeth (big gear) is 28. I am reasonably certain its a stock 34 box. Any other advise as to what should be replaced in there like bearings, thrust washers etc would help, I dont want to do it twice! Ken

It wouldn't be a bad idea to get some new thrust washers. You'll want the end play on the countershaft to be within a useable limit and somewhere between .005" and .017" would be the numbers to shoot for. If the box has a lot of miles on it or any signs of corrosion pitting anywhere you might consider new bearings. The prices on new ones aren't all that bad.
