Broken spring shackle on the road.

What broke? the bushing, the threaded studs or the shackle?

Any case, jack that side of the body up, wedge a chunk of 2 x 4 between the spring/axle

Then call AAA for a flatbed tow.

Scrounge a short length of 4"X4" and jam it between the axle and the frame. This is a tried and true method of getting home under your own power.

Ooops! I just did what makes me mad about lots of posts.... I didn't read the post before me with the same advice! Sorry, Tom!

Back in 1939 my mother and father where on their honey moon in Bethlehem,N.H.,when the right rear spring perch broke on his 34 cabriolet. My mother and father drove the car to Downing's Ford Garage,in Littleton,N.H.,when there the mechanic told them,he did not have the parts to repair, but could temporary fix,so they could enjoy their honey moon. The mechanic jacked the weight off the spring, and placed a block of wood, under the right rear spring shackle, and tide the block with wire.My parents were probably happy being on their honey moon, but really happy when the owner,Mr.Downing, said "no charge have a safe honey moon.E.P.W.

I have seen a carrige bolt used to replace a broken ball joint

I have seen a couple of links of chain replacing the shackle side plates on a car in the junk yard
