Broken head stud 35 motor

While torquing down my heads, something just went loose on the nut that I was torquing. I took the socket off and by hand unscrewed the nut, but could not pull the bolt up through the head. I was real disappointed and left things just the way they where. It was hot and muggy and this was not the time to dig into a new problem. So tomorrow what should I expect to find when the head comes off? The head bolts where new about three years ago. Hopefully it's just the stud and not the block. Bummed, Chet/ma.

Chet, Before anything else, check the nut, you may have stripped the threads in it and the stud could be perfectly alright. Try the simple solutions first. Brian

Brian,I did what you said. Checked threads in the nut. They where all there. So I put the washer back on and screwed the nut down to about the thickness of a flat screw driver. Then put the screw driver between the nut and washer. The broken part of the stud just popped out into my hand. The stud had twisted off about 1/4 below the nut. Off came the head and out came the broken stud. Thanks for your in put. Chet/ma.

I just breathed a big sigh of relief. Glad things worked out well! Perhaps all of the studs should be replaced while the head is off? Dennis/Arkansas

Chet, You are lucky; normally when I experience a broken stud, it snaps off below the block surface. Good to hear your outcome, Brian
