broken crank pulley

Has anyone broke a crank pulley? I had one break last night. It broke around the belt area on the three ears from the crank snout. What causes this?

I sold one on eBay the buyer claims is cracked, once he returns it he'll get a full refund. Once I have it I'll see were he claimed it is cracked.

I see several engine out of the car with broken pulleys. I assume it happens from careless handling when the engine is out. With the engine in the car, I can't see any reason for the pulley to break. Maybe if a fan blade broke and hit it.

One of the webs was gone on mine when I bought it.. Drove it for 30 years before I decided to replace it..

I broke a chunk out of one by using a bar through the hole to turn the engine when checking timing --ran it missing the chunk for many year, it was a reminder to use the hand crank.

I have seen a few with a crack in 1 web that was hard to see --off the car.

The George Riley secrets of speed article about how to have a 100 mph A said that the cast pulley was not good for "high speed", that a mallable iron or steel pulley was needed.

the pulley must have cracked sometime when the engine was put in. I have just taken the car out on its maden voyage and i noticed the ammeter reading discharge so i looked and it broke off from the spokes. Can they be replaced with the engine bolted in?

Take a look at the crank pulley at idle then speed up RPM's and see if it moves. The crank end play may be the root of the problem.
