Just wanted to show a picture of an axle I broke 2 weeks ago.
It's a 39 truck axle I have on my AV8.Lucky for me I was just
taking off went it broke.
Most likely reason it broke is that at some point in it's life it wasn't tight enough and was driving on the key instead of the taper. Always mag a used axle and look real hard at the inboard end of the keyway for a crack starting there.
BINGO!
Hey, wait a minute! I assure you I am too young to be mixing with theEvery time you say that, I picture you at some Church hall on a Thursday Night with all the old ladies!![]()
It's highly doubtful this happened from too much torque. As has been suggested (strongly) at some time or another, the drum was not installed correctly. That sets these axles up for certain disaster.Stock 8rt,mash the gas ,popped the clutch, that's all she wrote.
Putting drum brake retainers on.

I'm going to put retainer brackets on ,I see that there are several on the market.
Macs, speedway, tardel, also seen one from a barner, any body have any info ,pro. or con. which is the one to use.
Pete,The clips will be better than nothing but will still fail if the axle breaks on cornering.
The better solution is the weld on ring type with the 2 studs that go through the backing plate holes.
