Bren Gun Carrier Engine

Damn!....That engine sounds smooth. Is that a single barrel carb? Where did you get that beautiful test stand? - it looks to be new....

I notice the ammeter says a bit minus when idling, and only goes to charge after revving.

Is this normal for the old generators ?

Does the cutout open every time at idle, even after it is revved the first time to close them ?

I absolutely LOVE your test stand! You are a man with a meticulous attention to detail - we'd get along just fine. Very nice engine and great work in general.

Great; just the engine I need for my CMP S60, it's now using a '49 8BA Canadian. Newc in Oregon

Tim...engine goes into back of carrier backwards. Trans is normal Ford truck 4 speed, all that shifter stuff points up towards driver since engine is backwards. Ford truck rear axle goes way up front to drive the tracks. Steering is wild...minor changes by turning whole axle slightly, major by working brakes on one side. That whole mess is controlled by a complicated cam near the center of the contraption.

i used to have the american version, the T16 universal carrier. in that, the engine faced forward, and the steering was two levers like a skid steer.

Bruce what the hell are you talking about????? Engine is in rear middle behind drivers left side not backwards rear axle is a floating axle and its in rear , everthing is the same except it operates on right side and shifters is on left side pedals are the same as a ford truck :) steering is a warping system of the tracks to skid steer it is just like a tiller in a tank .

Oops...I was just reading a manual from a British Oxford carrier! Same general idea as the Ford type, but bigger, fatter, and front wheel drive/rear engine using a Cadillac flathead V8! That stuck in my head.
But normal Ford carriers in the manuals and picture books I have all have the steering box with wheel working through the weird cam down in the floor...turning wheel a bit warps the treads by shoving over the middle suspension units, then continued wheel turning moves cam sorta thing more and it actuates the mechanical brake on one side or the other of the drive axle to force a sharper turn. Strange and interesting system obviously built on a budget. I have a diagram somewhere in a manual from an Australian built carrier, but I think all or most versions used this system...?

Just to confuse the issue ,was there not a similar carrier built in England with a front diff and called a lloyd carrier with all Ford V8 running gear and I think built by Wolesly.I think there is one restored version in N.Z.Dragging this out from ancient and remote areas of memory banks so might be wrong. Cheers

I've got an Osprey book that covers at least some of the prototypes, and somewhere a book called "making Tracks" with more history. Lots of odd stuff, and some really weird proposals (many of them probably suicidal) for new wartime uses. Yessir, just drive it up to the nearest Tiger and push the red button...
