Break-in Oil Weight?

Fellas- the shop that did the machining of my engine (Y-block) components recommended straight 30 wt. oil for the initial break-in. I'm under the impression that this info is outdated at best, and a meltdown waiting to happen, at worst. What's the consensus here? Also, I'll need 6 qts., correct? -Thanks- /DD

The new Rotella has been changed to make the tree-huggers happy, it is only 1100 ppm ZDDP You can get the Motorcraft Diesel 15W40 at Wal-Mart or Autozone and it is much better at 1335 ppm ZDDP about $16 for a 5 qt jug I used it for break-in and stuck with it,and you'll be putting Ford in a Ford!

I was also advised to put Rotella, Motorcraft or WolfsHead 15W40 diesel oil in my 292. And a bottle of Lucas Break-in additive.

I used Rotella and and a bottle of Comp Cams break-in additive a machinist friend gave me, So far so good and I still use the Rotella.

Anything over 1000 to 1100 PPM zinc is OK. Rotella can be found in a 10W30 if you look. On my new 312 it will have Rotella 15W40 with a bottle of zinc breaking additive. Buy whatever oil is available near where you will be driving that is on the lists above.

I also use Rotella ! Can be bought anyplace and even Hell Mart ! You can also use Diesel oil because that has zinc in it too . Rotella is still the cheapest and works fine .
