Any recomendations for a reputable person to reapir cracks in Brass tail light parts before I have them nickel plated? Thanks Rod

I would recommend having the same shop that does the plating do the repair/ resto on the cracks and work out any dents. That way any problems are not yours.

There is a shop in Chicago that does very high end classic/ antique auto resto/ plating. NOT CHEAP but you get what you pay for. They usually have a spot at midwest area swaps. I saw them last at Iola. A few years ago I had them do a pair of dented, cracked, brass '28-'29 headlamp rims. They meticulously picked out all the dents, silver brazed the cracks, laid down heavy copper which was then dressed down to restore original contours. Next, being knowledgeable about old car parts, they finished with a heavy nickel that was mechanically buffed smooth. They also do over the top stainless resto on dented, cracked parts.

I will also contact anyone who deals with early Brass cars. I see they will be at Hershey too this year. I have a orginial mirror bracket i would like plated .. thanks Mike

Another alternative is to use the same person who repairs local high school band instruments. You will be surprised of the quality they can do at such an affordable price.

I use silver solder and a white paste flux to solder up cracks (althp it looks more like brazing it is called silver solder).
Then I file and dress off the excess and sand smooth,
I hope this helps,
Ken

Rod,

Like Ken stated above, silver solder is what we've always used and it works well. Its readily available from places like McMaster-Carr (although not the cheapest stuff in the world!) and you could probably do the repairs yourself with a little practice. If you have some old scrap brass things laying around, use them first to get the hang of torch and heat control.
