Brass Era part Information Wanted

My Aunt Bess came to me with a Brass Era kerosene lamp wanting to know if I knew what it is worth or what it goes on. She knows I sale parts now and then but I am not up on the price of Brass Era or "T" parts. I took some pictures of it and they will explain everything I know about the lamp. If anyone can give us an idea of its value I would appreciate it. I sell V8 parts now and then so I already know a part is worth what someone is willing to pay or what a person is willing to accept. If I can't get a value or what make it goes on I will take it to Hershey and ask some of the Brass era guys what they know about it. It could be for a Curved Dash Olds, Cadillac, "T" or something else. The top has a lot of information on it including the Mfg. Send me a PM if you like to share any information you might know about this or just post it here on this Forum would be good. JimOH

Neverout lamps were used on many cars during the brass era. The lamps were used as a tail lamp and could be taken off and held by the bail and used as a lamp to see with at night. Sort of like an early flash light.

Probably pre-1910 looks like Oldsmobile but not. Put it over on the Horseless Carriage
Club of America site.

Maybe not, but sure looks similar to the side lamp on early Packard. Most '10 and up used square style side lamps as the vogue. The bail type being somewhat earlier.

Many lamp manufacturers existed during the brass era. Phare, Solar, E&J, Jno. Brown were just a few. Neverout lamps were made by the Rose Manufacturing Co. and were used by many auto manufacturers. They were not specific to any particular car. Most lamps that were made for a specific car would have had that cars name on the chimney of the lamp.

If you notice the words on the top of the lamp, it is called a safety lamp. Their claim to fame was that it was safe to use as a trouble light because the font was filled with a cotton batting that soaked up the kerosene, preventing spill-over when carried by the bale. The one you have is a tail lamp. It was placed to the left of the license plate (facing the rear) with the white lens shining on the plate and the smaller red lens facing the rear of the car. To my knowledge, Olds used them on the Curved Dash models for tail and side lamps. Most were sold at Western Auto as universal replacements when the original lamps burned through. While old and interesting, they are not uncommon. Maybe worth $50 to $75. Just my opinion....

HCCA Discussion Board not available at this time. Thanks for the help so far. I will check to see what the AACA web site has to offer.

I am going to take it to Hershey. I told my Aunt that I will try to get her $150 for it because it is mint. I may be dreaming but if it doesn't sell I will buy it from her and hang it in my garage. It will make a nice wall hanger. Thanks to all that commented on this.

Thanks to all for the information you all gave me.
I believe it found a good home to a fellow at Hershey.
