Brake question. Can't stop too quickly without squeaking.

Didn't quite get to taking off the drums. Going to get the tool, and take a look. I did the adjusting of the rods and wedges, and I will certainly need to pull the drums. Things are better, but not the way they are supposed to be.

Thanks for the point in the right direction everyone. I'm beginning to understand this brake system better already. You guys are awesome.

Once you pull the brake drums off, everything becomes crystal clear. I did a lot of reading before I started on mine. After actually seeing them and how they work, it is quite a simple and effective system. Good luck and keep us posted!

Gregg,
I was away from Model A's for years, while raising a family, I had to TOTALLY RE-LEARN THE BRAKE SYSTEM:eek:

Some good news. I took the car out on my street and did some listening while driving at slow speeds. I narrowed it down to noise coming from one wheel. Drivers side, rear wheel. Just to verify, I pulled the rod from that wheel. Bingo. The car is actually braking better without it (because I was compensating at the foot before).

Obviously, I'm not going to be driving it much until I can break into the drum and fix what needs fixing. Feels good to narrow it down though!

Even though you nailed it down to the left rear, you'll need to remove all 4 drums and check out the brakes. The rears were a mess on two of my Model A's when I first bought them. The fix was as easy as replacing the right rear drum and parking brakes on my 29 and fixing the parking brakes and adjusting the service brakes on my 28.

It's too bad some people just drive the cars and don't maintain them. Then the mechanical brakes get blamed and the old wives tale continues that you need to change to hydraulic brakes to stop.

Absolutely. First priority is the one I know needs some attention, but the others need checking and probably a little love.
