Brake pin peening

On the '30 rear brake actuators the pins say to heat red hot and peen the ends. I don't have anything to heat them so can they be peened without heating or can you use bolts instead?

Thanks

Can't remember the BRAND, but I have a Propane torch, with FUEL & AIR adjustments, that will even heat the FAT end of the gear shifter goody!

Guess I missed that bit of information, I just peen the ends. The pins are soft and I don't think you really would need to heat. (?)

Why don't you use a propane torch. It seems like everyone has a propane torch. Propane wont get the rivets real hot, but it would help.

NO BOLTS for this application!!!

The purpose of the rivet is to get fat and fill the voids so there is no play.

A bolt can allow for some play and the arm change position, wear and what not. Not a good thing for brakes.

Personally I just squished them in my vice. I have to add though my vice is very large and can put a lot of force on something. By very large it is close to 175 lbs in weight. The handle is 1.5' long and about an inch thick.
