brake help info

Hello I am stuck here it is I am putting 58-60 Buick backing plates with the alum Buick drums on my 42-48 spindles they are the 21A , I have made the spacer between the backing plate and the spindle but now the drum scrapes the backing plate although the spindle nut goes on. I can't thin off the spacer as I am about a eight inch off the king pin. Any info is greatly appreciated..
Part 2 of this problem I have also put the same Buick combo on another car and it works just fine...I am stuck Richard in PA

I don't have a clue, maybe try the HAMB, that site is more geared to modified cars. Folks over there are doing some amazing things and may have advice for you.

Turn down or carefully grind down the lip of the brake drum where it's rubbing or cut down the lip on the backing plate or if the lip of the backing plate fits into a groove on the lip of the drum make the groove deeper. The last idea is the most difficult to do of the three. Hope you have access to a lathe.

To me, it sounds as if one of two possibilities is occurring here. First, are you sure that BOTH sets of spindles are 21A (SQUARE-back) spindles? If the set that is giving you trouble are 78A (ROUND-backs), there is a slight difference in the steel shape of the upper king pin area.

Second possibility......have you measured to see if there is a difference in the thicknesses of the inner bearing adapters, between the set that works and the set that rubs? OR, is it possible that the pair of bearing adapters used on the "NO-trouble" set-up DOES NOT have a radius machined on the inner side of the ID, so that those adapter would not seat properly on the radius where the spindle transitions at the backing plate surface? Somehow, it seems like the "TROUBLE" set-up needs to have the inner bearings spaced MORE-OUTBOARD by say....an 1/8" or so.

You're gonna have some awesome front brakes there for sure, when ya get it wrung-out properly! DD
