Brake Drum Interchange

Can I replace my 1928 Roadster AR brake drum with standard Model A brake drums?

Is it a straight across replacement or will I have to change other brake components, like backing plates, etc?

Thank you.

this gets complicated but here goes.
The front drums are interchangeable on the hubs. There are two different rear AR hubs = one is interchangable the opther is not. The lugs are different.

You can not run AR wheels on standard hubs and vice versa you can not run standard wheels on AR drums. The depth of thickness of the inner part of the wheelsis fifferent on the two, thus one will not seat properly on the other.

I am not at home and using someone else computer today. When i get home next week I can send you pictures showing the difference.

On a side and related note. The new cast iron AR drums that are available from the vendors are not correct and DO NOT seat properly to the AR wheels. I bought a set and it has taken me months and over $200 of new machine work to get them to work right.

Thank you Ken for the information.

I've been want to put 16" wires on my Roadster, but AR brake drums do not allow. I've been offered a set of standards Model A drums.

The brakes work very well, and I am not wanting to do a lot of work or spend a lot of money changing them out, when the brakes work great.

I am a Model A novice, have owned this car for 5 year and still learning.

Yesterday, went to install the rebuilt speedometer and chrome instrument panel. The panel came with the car when I bought it, but it is one piece of Chinee junk. Not one single component will fit correctly in the junk panel, even after modifying. I am going to install everything in the original after I paint it, then find one that is made correctly or a used one in good shape.

The Chinee one will probably go to my brother for target practice and then in the scrap bin.

Again thank you and will look forward to your next post.

I am assuming your new to you standard brake drums already have the hubs installed in them. If so, then yuo are almost ready to go. BUT do check the thickness of those new to you, used drums. From 40 years of bad brake experience i will not put on any Model A, brake drums that are less than .110 thick after final turning - brake fade is the problem. ken

Ken,

If jr-41 want's to run 16's, why can't you just change drums/hubs and leave
the brakes alone? Just picked up another ve-28 rear end this weekend set-up
that way. I would think it HAS to work?

Thanks Ken and d.j.

One of my club members has a set of good standard brake drums/hubs, he went to hydraulics. No one could say whether they would work or not without replacing the other brake components.

If just swapping out the drums/hubs will work, then I will have the drums turned and will install.

Ken, will make sure that I have plenty of drum thickness prior to turning. My brakes work very well, no reason to install anything that will make them worse.

Again, thank you............
