we sent our brake drums into our local Pepboys to get our brake drums resurfaced, us and the guy over there cant get the seal out from the wheel bearings. note these are original seals. any help would be great. ill look in my books again, in case i've missed something.

That might be a red flag that you should take them somewhere else. Are there any good automotive machine shops in your area?

As far as seals go they should pry out but they might be stubborn, I did mine a while back and they weren't to bad just make sure you have new ones to replace

Maybe i'm missing something but why would you need to remove any seals to turn the drums? Thought the drums in '49 were seperate from the hubs.

Good catch having just done my 41 seals I didn't even think of that but I believe my 49s are separate.

Put the drum on a flat surface with stud side up & with a punch (preferably a brass drift) punch out the bearing which in turn will remove the seal then clean up inner part of drum so you can install new grease etc. (bearing is not used to turn drum).

if they cant get the seal out. go somewhere else!! as mentioned already make sure you have new ones to replace them. good luck.

Regarding your brake drums, they should be measured to verify if they are within the spec for turning, they could have been turned a few times and be out of spec. New drums are available.
Getting the seals out of my '49 were a real pain. The seal OD from some seal manufacturers has was looks to be paint, which they claim (both CR and National) improves the seal's fit in the bore, which makes for difficulty when time to replace.

Regarding Pep Boys, about 10 years ago, we were passing through Santa Barbara in my Bronco, and the master cylinder went out late Saturday evening. Went to Pep Boys first thing Sunday morning over on State St., and in 2 hours I had a new Raybestos MC, and was on the road. Fine work and service. I was prepared for the opposite. I've had my company car in there a few times for lease company service and they are now using very el cheapo parts. No longer are the shelves stocked with the brand names we would recognize.

Joshua, you picked the wrong place to bring them, the oldest car there used to workingon is probebly 15 yrs old. Bring them to the oldest brake shop in your area, and speek to the oldest employee there. ken ct.

Cotten's in Anoka is the best place for you to look for advice. Those guys know thier stuff and have most everything you will need for your 49.
I bought everything for my 50 from them.
They have all of the seals, bearings, tune up stuff, wheel cylinder. All of the stuff you'll need to put it back on the road safely.
Also a machine shop
