Hi guys- My friend wants to replace the brake cross shaft bushings on his '36 Phaeton. Can someone provide the procedure to be followed? Also, are the bushings available from the parts vendors? Thanks, Stan.
Stan, I have rebuilt 35-36 brake cross shafts for some of my cars and one of the most difficult parts for me was removing the old rivets. I used standard size oil impregnated bronze bushings purchased from McMaster Carr. The original steel shafts were usually worn so much at the bearing contact areas that they required replacing. No one reproduces that shaft that I am aware of, so I had to machine my own from CRS bar stock. I also added zerk grease fittings (not shown in these pics) so I could occasionally add a little grease to the bearings. Some of this was covered in a previous post along with pictures.
