Trying to adjust my new brakes. Front drivers side not adjusting . Took off brake rod. Noticeing some play in the brake adjusting arm from the 15 degrees Should there be and play( 5-10 degrees)in the brake adjusting arm after the 15 degree forward angle? Remedy if a problem

If I read your post right you are are referring to the free play between the push rod and the arm that pushes down on the push rod when the the brake lever is moved forward of engaging the rod, that play is normal,as long as the lever is 15 degress forward of vertical when the brake wedge is engaged.

All slack should be taken up at the 15 degree angle. Rotate the arm from as far forward as it can go until all slack is taken up. The arm will move freely until some resistance is felt and that is where all slack is taken up. That angle should be 15 degrees. If not add a shim or a new rod that goes through the king pin until the 15 degree angle is obtained with no slack. Then adjust the pull rod so that the pin just slips in at the 15 degree angle. Hold the arm so that all the slack is taken up when you slip the pin in. Do not adjust the pull rods after this but make all brake adjustments with the adjusters in the backing plates.

It is sometimes handy to pull the drum off and observe the brake shoe action when adjusting for 15 degrees arm location. The brake shoes should not move until the 15 degree angle is reached and then they should move after the arm is moved further back. If the wedge is worn the shoes will not retract correctly. Worn wedges should be replaced before doing any other work on the brakes.
