Does the brake actuating arm stud supposed to have an insert that goes in the spring perch where it is fastened by a nut ? The stud is very loose on both sides .L/R

As this a critical part of the brake system I find it hard to except that this is correct.
The Red Book shows a "thing" before the nut that could be either a spacer or a split washer , hard to tell.pg 1-6.

Any other thoughts please ??

To insert the brake actuating arm you have to get things more or less into position and then tease them into the proper location. If the kingpin is loose then it is relatively straightforward to rotate the arm into the perch with the arm inserted into the kingpin. If the kingpin is fixed then it gets to be a bit more complicated.

Once inserted into the perch, the stud in the arm is fastened with a nut and fairly thick split washer. If I remember correctly the casting on the actuating arm has a shoulder to center the stud in the perch opening.

Text on page 1-6 says lock washer. Picture shows split ring lock washer. As long as the brake actuating arm is in the king pin properly, my take is that the stud does not have to be located exactly. But as Jay Jay said, if there is a locating shoulder then all the better.

Ford changed the fastener on this part from initially being a castle nut with a cotter pin to a regular nut and a split lock washer in mid-1929. So you will see both in the wild. If the stud is cross drilled, use a cotter pin.
