bouncing

Is there a good way to keep your engine running steady after you hit a bump and your foot is bouncing on the accelerator?
My 40 Ford has a factory spring on the firewall for the accelerator but that doesn't keep it steady.I have thought of putting a spring at the Carb. but not sure where to hook it to the carb. and block.

You need lead with your toe. If you are resting your weight on your heel, and depending on your ankle muscles to keep steady pressure on the pedal, bounce and jounce will cause a variation in fuel supply. So by holding the heel off the floor board and using a stiff ankle you will find more control when the ride gets rough.

You need not drive in this manner all the time but when you see a variation in road surface coming try it. Just raise the heel from the floor and use your heavier muscles: calf thigh and hip to regulate the position of the pedal. Good Luck.

I've got a spring off my carb runs from where the accelerator rod connects and it runs around the the oil filler tube at the front of the engine (on Canadian but not US flatheads). You could probably make an L shaped bracket and mount it under an inlet manifold bolt. It will make for more comfortable driving.

In reality you need to just lift off the pedal and avoid the self generating on off bouncing you can get. When these vehicles were built they did not tend to have "speed bumps" all over the place. You might be able to fit a pedal footrest to the right of the pedal and that can aid pedal accuracy as you can opt to control the pedal by a twisting motion, balancing between the rest and the pedal. Good for longer journeys too.
