boring one cylinder common practice?

How quickly we forget the "good old days" when you did what you had to to keep going. My father took us on vacation to the mountains and had to change out one rod bearing to get us back home. Then we had the one rod journal turned in the car. It lasted till we junked the car 15 or so years later. on another occasion, My friend and I removed a piston , stuffed a block of wood in the hole, cut off the rod on the crank with a hacksaw and drove the car for several weeks . I t shook bad, but still ran. My neighbor drove his work car for years with no 2nd gear because he could't afford to fix it. We've come a long way ,or have we?
