Body work

OK, I went through all my notes and did a search on the site.

Here is my question, My son and I have his body at the house and will start body work and stripping of the the body.

I have read the one should use phosphuric acid on the bear metal to keep it from rusting. How long does it last as I forsee the work taking quite a while.

Should I coat it with the acid and then in a day or two hit it with the wash primer until the whole car is done and then proceed with the epoxy primer?

Here is what I have for painting,

Wash primer DX1791
Epoxy primer DPLF
"Bondo" if needed
Sandable primer NCP271
Concepts Single Stage color

I sandblasted for 3 decades, now retired, I always worked on clean blasted metal, because I could re blast it if needed.

But, a friend of mine with a restoration business who outsources his blasting, swears by picklex to hold the rust off until he gets around to working on car.

I'm in the phosphoric acid camp, and so are a lot of other people who don't know it. Many of the "named" products that folks swear by are primarily phosphoric acid. I'll attach a couple pics, a before and after acid wash on a frame. That was two years ago and the frame still looks the same as the after picture. That's not to say there isn't possibly some micro rust forming, but it's not visible. Another wash before coating should manage that if it exists......in other words normal paint (or powder coat) prep. We're known for our rain up here, but relative humidity is lower than a lot of other places (like Fl ?), so local conditions might dictate faster protective coating. But the oxide coating that results from the acid wash has proven reasonably durable here.

(note to the ultra observant, the shock pictured is not the final app)
