body paint

I'm looking for Bronson Yellow paint to touch up my 1931 Model A. Can anyone direct me to a good source? I don't need much. The only place I found some was on an online store but the price for a quart was a few hundred dollars - a lot more than I'd like to spend. Spray paint would be okay.

Go to your local paint store that sells automotive paint and get them to match up your car's color and mix up a pint or quart. I got mine from Sherwin-Williams.

I took my hood over to a local NAPA parts store and had it scanned.
They made up a rattle can of paint not promising an exact match. I was surprised how well it matched. It’s good enough to get by until a full body and paint is done.

Matching paint is an art! Remember some dries a slightly different color. I tried about four times to get a stock model A blue green, nothing worked! The closest was a 92 Cadilac color. I'm going to spray the whole thing eventually. I called TCP global for it and a gallon of the original Ford color was over $ 400.00 bucks. BTW I had a local auto paint co scan it too, The mix they came up with was a terrible match. They blamed it on the curvature of the door. That slight curvature threw off the light enough to distort the color? Also The color of the primer underneath can affect the relative lightness and darkness of the final coat.

I shot Industrial gray acrylic enamel, shoot 4 to 1 with hardener.. glosses like candy, hard coating.Showing the car?being judged? Or just a nice clean driver? That question answered will decide your budget.

I discovered a paint code for Bronson Yellow as IM-545. But a search turns up paints that have a different name. Whoever painted the car before I purchased it must have used some kind of junk paint. I was draining the gas (stupidly, through the top) and some spilled on the hood, right in front of the window. It instantly destroyed the paint. I figure if I can find a near match that will have to do.

After some research on mafca.org etc I learned Bronson Yellow is:
DuPont C8067 or PPG IM545 or BASF 22665
Go to a auto paint store show them those numbers and see what they say.

Thanks for the information. I hope a regular hardware store that mixes paint can make some for me. The color of your car looks similar to mine.

No, they probably can't! Auto paint is different from House Paint. You need to find a supplier of auto paint and body work supplies, Boonton Auto is one, but it may be too far (Monroe to Boonton ? Up 287 Just thought I'd drop the name) Never try to mix house paint (Water based latex) with car paint (Not water based latex). Auto paints are usually acrylic enamel or a lacquer and chemically miles away from house paint.

You're right. I contacted a view hardware stores and they told me none of their paint will be good for a car. I'm in the process of contacting a few auto body shops. Hope I get a positive response from one of them. I'll try Boonton Auto also.

Ken- Only buy a "sample" can, ( about $12) This is about 3-4 oz of paint. Enough to do a couple of square feet. You don't say how you're applying it, But if you are planning on spraying it, you're going to need a compressor and a spray gun. The best spray gun that can be had for the money (about $15) is the Harbor Freight "Purple Gun". They are Chinese made and quite remarkably good for the hobbiest. And I'm no fan of HF! There are many videos on Youtube about Purple Guns. Good luck!

Thanks Terry,
Yeah, a sample can would be more than enough. I only need to paint the cowl between the windshield and the hood. I'm hoping to use a brush. If I'm lucky it would look terrible. I hope I never need to do this again.

I get touchup bottles from paintscratch do com. I bought some for my 57 Skyliner, and both colors were spot on.

I went to the website but couldn't enter the year - 1931. I did provide the information in the area provided, along with some of the codes from couple of manufacturers.

The NAPA store that mixes paint near me says our yellow (DuPont C8067) was also called Medium Rattan and was used on 1980 Lincoln Mark V. A pint runs $41. Needs reducer and a coat of clear coat afterward.

I, at last, found a paint store that managed to perfectly matched my paint color. It was a good distance from my home and I didn't want to drive my A there. I went nuts trying to figure out what I could remove from the car to bring as a sample. I managed to unscrew the door latch, that had a tinny amount of paint on it. The guy is a real artist. He manged to mach the color perfectly! By the way, the color of my car is way different than bronson yellow.

Good paint matchers are worth their weight in gold! In rereading your comment with the picture of the damage, I came to the same conclusion, It's just not Bronson yellow! There were some shades of brown that Henry used. It's probably one of these. By the way, you wouldn't have the name of that store and or the name of that mixer would you?
Terry

The store is named Kemperle. The store I went to is in Cranbury, NJ. The fellow I worked with is named Andy. However, he sent to part to another store where he said a "real artist" works - I think that store is in Linden, NJ. They do have a lot of store all over.
