I have a 1929 roadster basket case that I am redoing I had to replace the subrails and pans and now i need to know the location of the body blocks. Thanks Tim

go to westcotts auto, click on home then click on parts, then body to frame it will show you a pic where the body blocks go, they also have frame drawings and measurements there

Do you have Les Andrew's Mechanic's Handbook? On page 1-28 it shows a nice picture of the block locations. The picture also shows the bolts use for the body blocks. I am pasting the Les Andrew's page below. Hope this helps.

don't forget that one set of blocks is obstructed by the curtain pan once the pan is installed.

ericr,
I don't understands about the body blocks being obstructed by the curtain pan. I thought the curtain pan was set into the area under the front seat on 29 roadsters. There are no body blocks near the front seat frame that I know of, they are all under the body subrails. Can you privide a picture as I can't understand the body blocks you are referring to. I understand there are a pair of bolt that hold the number 4 blocks in place, but they are not obstructed that I know of.

Rusty, if the cowl block is number one, the number three blocks, whose bolts go through the backrest riser, are indeed obscured by the back of the curtain pan. You are right in that the curtain pan covers the opening right below the front seat frame but the pan continues beyond the riser. Maybe they changed the design for the later models, I don't know.

What Les Andrews book is this drawing in, I have vol. 2 and can not find it? and sure would like to see the drawing for a 31 roadster? Thanks

Ahh, Thanks Rusty, If anybody out there has vol. 1 and could post the body block drawing for a 31 roadster I sure would appreciate it. Thanks

Karasmer,
Here is the diagram of a 30/31 roadster body block layout. It is from the same book.

Thanks much Rusty, I appreciate it, now to get the dimensions body block A looks like the only tricky one to make I think I have a few of the C blocks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the rear most body block on the 28-29 roadster was a short one, similar in length to the phaeton one, and in that regard the Les Andrew's illustration in Post #3 is in error. The long block shown in that illustration was not used until mid 1930 I believe.

Randy,
The short blocks WERE used for 28/29 coupes and roadster, but since the blocks were so short, many of the subrails where the blocks were located split and cracked. If you order a 28/29 coupe/roadster body block kit, you get the longer rear block in the kit. I used the longer rear most block, as is, on my 28 special coupe to provide better support for the rear part of the body. The rear block could easily be cut to the shorter original length if desired.

I agree with Rusty, might as well use the added support, unless you're going in for high points judging, then you can go for it after the judging.
People are heavier these days, so you will need the added support.:D
