Hi Jeremy,

1. When the engine is running, or not running, do you see the gasket leaking?

A. If yes, the head gasket is leaking.
B. If no, the head gasket is not leaking.

2. Next, if you find no water in the oil, & no bubbles showing up when the radiator cap is removed, good chances it is not leaking.

3. Why does the engine & head look like that?

Not enough trees to make enough paper to write down all of the guesses of why it looks like that.

Most of us have seen far worse paint jobs.

Hope this helps.

I drove the car approx. 25-30 miles this weekend using several different trips. I usually wipe the oil after each trip and it reappears. I don't think it is enough to watch the oil leak, but it appears after a six mile trip.

I'm not necessarily concerned with the paint as much as the oil in the seam. Should I be?

Thanks for the thoughts. --J

Some seepage through the filler in the head gasket isn't unusual . Model A head gaskets are different than modern car head gaskets . The filler material in the gasket is exposed to the water jacket at each water passage and head stud . The seepage isn't oil . The Felpro fourth revision head gasket may be an improvement . I've heard that the fourth revision is sealed with silicone at the passages and studs but have no experience with the latest revision . I wouldn't be too quick to replace the gasket because of the possibility of studs breaking off in the block . No matter how good you are , it happens and then you've got to be real good or find someone who is . If no water-coolant is mixing with the oil or entering the combustion chambers , I wouldn't worry too much .
