Black with Straw wheels

When I bought my '29 Tudor in 1966 it was a dull black with straw wheels. I have seen many vehicles painted dull black with yellow/straw wheels. The original '28 Tudor I have was painted a dull black over the fairly nice original paint.
Was it a fad to paint older vehicles like that? If so, when was the fad? If not a fad, then why was it done?

It could have been painted with rustoleum thinned with acetone and no hardner. It is glossy at first but fades quick and looks flat.

As I recall, Western Tire (and probably others) in the late forties had a repaint kit available for a brush repaint of an entire car. I don't know what type of paint was in the kit but I do remember that the paint did not have much shine when new and that shine didn't last very long. One Model A Tudor owner in town had a black repaint that soon turned to satin black. My recollection of Model A's at the time was that they were all satin black and I have often wondered if most of them had been repainted that color. Gar Williams

if you are immensely patient, you can sand & polish the repaint off and keep the original paint on your Tudor.

when we removed the repro cowl lamps from our unrestored Coupe, I put the finish coat on the area with a brush. after it hardened, I wet sanded it starting with 320 grit and finishing with 2000. looks great, with a bit of patina where I got down into the primer. the car has a poor 1970s repaint. If I had more patience, I'd sand the whole thing down to the original.

have seen illustrated accounts of several cars that folks have successfully done in this manner. I admire their dedication.

My Dad's '30 Chevy Special Sedan got a black brush-job some where along the way, probably in the '60s ?

Was originally Maroon with Black upper-body. Maroon did not hold up well in those days.
