big truck air compressor

Hi All,

Happened to come across another compressor, this one mounts on the engine and is driven with a pulley, anyone know any information on these? I will start to look but thought here is a good place to start.

Cheers

Corey

2US4VA Bendix Westinghouse was a compressor from as far back to WW2, at least. Many were coupled to a Model N Briggs and Stratton. It sat in a tubular frame work with a single steel wheel, making a wheelbarrow air compressor. I don’t have pictures of mine, I have two incomplete units. This same compressor was used for air brakes on some period trucks.

Thanks Henry,

Very interesting information i may mount it on the new truck, do you happen to know what the thread size is on the outlet of the compressor by any chance? I will buy some fittings to make a hose up.

Cheers

I couldn’t tell you off hand. My two incomplete units are a few counties away. Sadly I only have the one BW, the other looks like an old a/c compressor. A friend’s widow has a complete unit, sans the correct steel wheel, going to be getting that some time; it runs. Nice that I have 2 wheels.

Don't know if this will help you at all with the installation, but here are images of a Westinghouse Brake Brochure printed in late 1935.

Sure looks like the type on the Air Corp compressors. They have a little fork on the head for unloaders. Neat little things.

Thank you all,

Interesting information, I found a few spots on the net also.

Cheers

I have a big truck air compressor but i don't think it is like what you need. I looked them up while looking at lrdg trucks with compressors and would have remembered if it was the same.

I believe there are a couple of versions of the big truck tire inflator. Here's an example of an earlier version that I picked up at Hershey last year as I found it and a couple more pictures after I've done some work on it. It's missing a few parts so I've been working on restoring it and getting it back into working condition. I missing the intake vent, the outlet fitting and the spring to hold the drive gear in position. I had to have all the bushings replaced and the crankshaft reground too.

Todd,

The base Ford part number is 18422. As far as I can determine, these were manufactured by Outboard Marine and Saylor Beall for Canadian-built trucks. Many were exported to Australia during WW2. Anyone could have purchased one of these tire inflators and installed it, so there area probably some languishing on an old truck somewhere. Also, this is not the Westinghouse air brake compressor which is an entirely different pump mounted on the engine.

I suppose the tire inflator was used to re-inflate the truck tires after driving on sand in the Outback when the pressure reduced in the tires for a bigger and softer footprint and then the truck needed to drive on pavement again with higher pressure in the tires. It's not a strong air compressor so it would have taken quite a while to inflate 4 or 6 truck tires.

Attached is a page from a Canadian Ford Parts book and some another information I found. Can't help you find one of these tire inflaters as I've only ever seen one for sale which is the one I have and it was missing parts and in poor condition. Good luck with your hunt.

Dave
