So i have just about finished my 28 Roadster pickup and its time for me to get this on the road. Its going to be my daliy driver and im having probles with me and my girl friend shareing a jeep. I also need to drive it to make shure there everything is set. So i insure it and after paying a $700 down payment i go to the rmv to get it registered. They tell me my sales tax is going to be another $700 plus 75 for a titling fee then another 75 for registration fee. Thats $850 to register an old truck im sory but this just dosent make sence. They told me they value it from the blue book value of $10,000 my truck is not worth ten grand and i only paid $1,400 for it. Its as if the bill of sale meens nothing. Has any one elce had this problem? Any ways around it (i live in taxacussets).

I had to go through that a few times on other vehicles here in NJ. Typically a letter from the person that sold it to me stating the price I paid was enough.

Mass in cash poor, and the bill of sale means nothing. They are going by restored value, like it or not.I sent you a note with a little suggestion that has been working there, and legal too.

Another post that illustrates the wisdom of taking care of the paperwork BEFORE you start working on the vehicle.

Even in past years when it was easy to work with the CA DMV, I have always gotten my titles immediately upon acquiring vehicles. There are many ways for things to go wrong if you wait until you have finished restoration, not the least being the possibility of having to pay a LOT more money at the time of initial registration and for years thereafter.

Register it in New Hampshire, everybody here in CT of varying nationalities does, cops don't seem to question, town clerks don't. even when a complaint is made. Good luck.

Same here in Mass. Paid $6,500 for a 1930 non running coupe, but had to pay book value of $14,000 for taxes. I guess they have to come up with the money for the Big Dig some how!!!

Unrelated, but they extort as well. I had an 81 toyota pickup that wouldn't pass CA smog requirements. I was one month late going to the DMV because we were trying to get it to pass. I asked to put it on a non-op since it wouldn't pass. They told me I was too late to place it on non-op. WHAT? Yes sir, you have to pay the registration fee now. I asked why? Don't we pay in advance for the coming year? I couldn't use it, so why pay? They said it was law and they would take us to collections if it wasn't paid. I'd love to have the guy who wrote that law's neck in my hands.

Man I just got the rego fore my 28 open cabpickup,I use it as my daily driver, cost for one year $700.
Last week got the rego for my 33 sedan ,because its a v8 ,rego $987,But I changed it to what is called concessional rego here, this allows limited use, cost $171, 34 coming up on two months,it will go on the same rego.

I deleted a couple of posts that were political... Let's stay away from Politics... I think the Barn is too good for politicians.

Thanks!

My two cents,

It doesn't mean anything! I sell you a 2009 Corvette C6 coupe, you pay me for 45,000 for it and I give you a bill of sale for 4,500.

You take the bill of sale to the DMV, what is the Vette worth, 45,000 or 4,500?

Ok not a fair comparison. The same vette, I'm going through a divorce and don't want the wife to get the car or the monry so i sell it to you for 4,500 cash, what is the car worth now, 45,000 or 4,500?

A $10,000 car sold for 1,400 sounds too good to be true, so they assume you are cheating them. If your bill of sale was for around 6,000 they might not pull the blue book out if one were to show pictures.

In the state of New Jersey they will attempt to scare you into paying taxes on the top blue book value for a used car.

That is the value of a low mileage excellent condition car with a warranty from a dealer.

I bought a 100,000 mile used van from a private party and even got a receipt for the price paid. A month or two later I get a letter saying I need to pay more taxes or get the guy to sign the paper they sent that I paid less.

The guy was nice enough to sign the paper so I got off easy. I know others have just ignored the paper.

This practice is just a scare tactic that usually pays off for the state. I believe that the courts would decide that the value they use is unfair. The book they use states the value they use if for a dealer. The same book also lists private party values and takes into account condition. I would think the courts would be quick find that the state is wrong to use a dealer price when there is a clear listing for private party sales.

I have not found anyone who has gotten into trouble for ignoring the letter or sending in a letter telling them they are wrong in the value.

Since Wisconsin is one of the TEN HIGHEST TAXED States in the union and loosing population as well as business's...

[A State where more people work for the State and Local governments then people working in the private sectors!]

...I had to pay tax on somebody in the DMV's idea of the value of my 1930 Roadster. Plus the registration fee, plus the title transfer. Tax was for a $12,000 car. OUCH.

The only break I feel I had was my State Farm agent just added it to the policy, as if the 'A" was just another car. A couple of hundred bucks a year and that covers winter storage and meets all of the 'new' State Mandated requirements.

If I crash the 'A' then I'll just walk away from the smoldering pile of dog poop and look for another one.

skip.

I had a similar issue in trying to register my 31 Murray in Texas. They wanted to use the blue book for value. I took them the photos of the basket case it was when I bought it. I also offered a few parts invoices to show that I had paid sales tax on the parts and supplies for restoration. I ended up $400 for tax, title and registration.

I agree with Joe. I did my paper work the Month after I bought my 31 pick up. The Gentleman I bought it from gave a bill of sale for half of what I paid him . Plus I took Pictures of the ID number off the block and some general Pictures to so the condition . had no problem getting it titled here in Maryland , then I started working on it.

About the only other choice you have is if a friend is a car dealer (we all know they are trust worthy?) get a bill of sale from him, the RMV will accept that. Or, if you have time go through a friend in VT, get a title there and use that. There are other choices most are cheaper but take time.

Yep tax,s in mass. What,s one going to do,just pay it,the dmv don,t care if your car or truck is in a box. That,s the way it go,s.Rickmass.
