big belts or little belts

I have a 50 Merc engine for my 34 ford 5 window coupe at the machine shop. This coupe will have no hood or fenders just a rough 50s style hotrod. Before I buy the water pumps, generator, fan, belts etc. I need to decide wide or narrow belts. I'm staying with a 6 volt generator. I don't have any of these parts yet. I do have a line on a trade for an aluminum front 50 merc timing cover. I plan on a 49-53 Mallory dizzy. Any good or bad points to narrow or wide belt setups ? Gene

The wide belts were on trucks. You might need to use that type of water pump for your motor mounts. They usually have a flat surface for motor mounts. The narrow belts were on cars, but they have an angled mount surface for the motor mounts. I have always dealt with the narrow pullys/belts in cars. They work great, but check out the mounting surfaces.

My think my engine is a 49 -50 Merc. The cam says 8CM & only the exaust valves have hardend seat inserts. I see 49 Merc used a wide belt & the 50 & up mercs used a narrow belt. I could go either way. Just want to buy the best working setup. Gene

Think about how much room you have up front there, large belt fits in a tighter situation... Small belt components would not fit in my A roadster... Karl

I have 8CM water pumps, and they are flat, only raised higher than truck pumps. Also, may I ask what machine shop? Being close to Duluth, I'd be curious to know who has experience with machining flatheads for when I bring one in.

Thanks for the pic of you 8CM pumps. I like the look of wide belts. They look older and cooler to me. I like old stuff.

Carlton Machine shop in Cloquet is working on mine. The owner Jack is a older gent with over 50 years working on flatheads. He will build you a good engine at a good price. I bought a book by George Mcnicholl. That was $20 I should have put on my rebuild instead. My old hotrod don't need a $15,000 engine. I hear there is a good machine shop in Superior too but Cloquet is closer. Thanks Gene
