Better air filter

I have been looking for a better flowing air filter for my AV8 project. It doesn't take much to beat those cheap single air cleaners with the restrictive paper filters. This is what I came up with that didn't break the bank. I found a 70's to 80's vintage Harley Davidson air cleaner setup, modified the base, and found a K&N filter to fit it. Nothing high tech here just a better flowing filter that doesn't look like some modern billet aluminum piece.

Oh Bob! You may have my Holy Grail there!! Can you detail what you did to make it fit?

Lonnie,
As you can see, the base isn't the same on both sides, you need to cut the curved side and make it parallel with the straight side, so it ends up about a 6x9 oval. You also have to cut out the circular recess for the Harley carb and fill it in so it is flat. Use the carb bases from the small air filters and fit them to your new openings in the base. My intake is an Offy, so this just fits my carb spacing. Modify the existing brackets that hold the top on, and use the original chrome screws and your done. The hardest part was finding a filter element to fit. Most K&N elements are around $50.00, but this one is only $36.00 from Summit.

Something to keep in mind. The oil that is on the paper or whatever it is in K&N filters is VERY flammable. I almost lost my avatar roadster when a cheap condenser went bad causing the engine to backfire up through both carbs and immediately the K&Ns looked like 2 burning marshmallows. Burned the paint off my hood and some of the wiring off the engine. I was over 100 miles from home but had another condenser and some wire to energize the coil and I made it home. All caused by a bad condenser. I now use ones rated for marine use which are a little more robust. My fire extinguisher was in the rumble compartment, another mistake. When you need one you need it right now not 20 seconds from now!

Bob very nice work--just relating my K&N experience.

Glad to hear about the K&N filter story. I really didn't want one of these expensive oil soaked filters in the first place. I searched for a normal paper element and came up with nothing, several times. The oval filter is the problem, K&N was the only one with the size I needed.
