Pour a little oil down each cylinder and down the distributor hole before you fire it up so you have some lube in the top end.
I am having a struggle with which motor oil to use in my coupe engine today. It is completely rebuilt and we are adding the fluids to everything today. I would love to hear suggestions on which oil is working the best these days.
Thanks
FWIW, Humble Opinion:
As far as the thousands of worn out, oil burning and engine knocking Model A engines witnessed by most Forum members reported over the past twenty (20) years, here are at least two (2) important Model A Oil Facts that applies to "all" engines:
1. Immediately after "paying" for an engine rebuild, "everybody" is so very concerned "which" type of oil to use ....... to avoid having to pay soon ...... for another engine rebuild.
2. Then, not too long afterwards, "most" harmful engine wear is caused "not" " by which" oil was chosen ............... but ............. by this same or a subsequent "cheap" Model A owner not wanting to "pay" for providing fresh, clean oil as often as recommended.
...If the engine has not run since 1950 and it sat with oil in it there is a good chance there is a thick layer of sludge in the bottom of the pan-- many times deeper than the oil pickup
It is completely rebuilt
Since when are model A owners cheep![]()

I too use Castrol GTX but 20w50, only because I buy it by the case for my M/S's. No additives.
