Best coil location

You need around 1.5 ohms on the primary of the coil. This is between the key-on 12 volt source and the negative side of the coil. So either internal in the coil, loom resistor, and/or ballast resistor adding up to 1.5 ohms is required.

Just got this from Mallory regarding my ballast question. So I guess what he is saying is if the coil has 1.5 ohms then you don't need the resistor?

I just measured the primary resistance on my coil ( with printing: "does not need external resistor") and it read about 3.5 ohms. I am not using a ballast resistor and that reading should be enough to protect the points.

To measure resistance across the coil, find a good digital ohmmeter (or multimeter) and set it on a low scale (0 to 50 or 0 to 200 ohms) and touch the meter probes to the positive and negative terminals of the coil. that should give you a reading.

Since I tested my coil outside of the car, I would disconnect the wires to your in-car coil and place the ohmmeter probes on the positive and negative coil terminals and be sure to have the meter set on a low scale.

The two Bill's are right.....keep the coil away from the heat..
I also use 2 condesors....one on the coil the other on the dist....good insurance !

Thinking about putting back on the firewall, but the wire would be about 30 inches long. Seems to me I read that length would make the coil fail at a faster rate?
