best battery

I did a past search and I'm surprised that I could not find any past threads on this. What is the best battery for stock Model A, running a generator, only modified with a voltage regulator rather than a cut out.?

If you are not building a "Fine Point" judged car, and with the regulator I take it that you are not, I prefer Optima. It is light(11 lbs) and if the battery is still under the floor, then there is hardly a reason to remove the carpet or mat to check the water level. A bit pricey at @ $130 (Amazon), but last every bit of 6-7 years. Check out past threads on Optima Batteries. Ron

STARTRITE

About 9 or 10 years ago I was at the scrap metal yard and saw 3 identical batteries in the barrel. I pulled them out and figured they must have been standby power for something and probably just needed to be recharged. This was before the price of scrap metal got so high, so I only paid a couple bucks apiece for them. I put them on the charger and put one in my car. There's no date code on the batteries, but I figure they were at least a year or more old when I brought them home. I park the car and don't touch it for 5 to 6 months each winter, and when the road salt is gone the car starts right up. The same battery is still working fine after all these years and poor treatment:mad:.

It's made by E.P.M.. Products Baltimore, Md. 21226
Model 901
Group 1
Amp Hr Cap 6 hr rate 86.8
Amp Hr Cap 20 hr rate 100

I should look around and see who sells them, because if this one ever wears out, I'd sure like to buy another just like it.:)

BTW, I also am using my original powerhouse generator with my voltage regulator inside the generator.

Another vote for Optima. $115 with shipping included from Amazon. Install it and forget about it. Also suggest using the fancy Optima battery hold down bracket from Bratton's.

Optima's are good but be sure to budget another $20 for the special holder needed for it. I have a NAPA commercial 6 volt wet cell in mine came with the and it works well but do have a old optima (about 6 years ) that is stil good I carry it as a spare just in case

I like the NEW Ford script OPTIMA Battery .... Not the price... Ford guys always,, gets %^$#$@. What are they now [just under $300.00 ???]

The best battery I had for the A is the free battery that lasted 5 years, the best battery that I bought has been the Optima, now about 14 years old,I didn't have any special holder, the aftermarket one made of angle metal for group 1 battery fit just fine for me.

Best battery is sort of like best oil.

Battery Question:

Looking for a battery for 28 that has the negative post on the forward LEFT corner, instead of the right corner.

Reason is cable needs to be routed around the frame to the starter switch, does not go over the bell housing / flywheel housing.

Otherwise, the battery should be the regular amp / voltage for Model A.
Could use a longer cable, but believe the 28's had a battery with a left side negative post.

Any thoughts on this are appreciated. My current battery is a Farm & Fleet and it has been working well for three years. My car has a kill switch mounted to the upper starter to housing bolt which is turned off after every drive.

Thanks and Regards,

If you get the Optima 6V battery, there's plenty of room left to put the posts anywhere you want them.

Hi Tom, tell me more about the voltage regulator inside the power house. Thanks, Phil.

2 batteries.

One in the car, one on the shelf with an ocassional hook up to the float charger.

Switch them out every once in a while, and you'll usually have a fresh one, and one to jump the one under the floor board.

Without looking it up I'm not sure of the date, but the cable route did change during 1928 and my 9-27-28 has the original grommet and metal bracket on the flywheel cover mount. I'm thinking it changed during the early part of 1928?

The post that said "best battery argument is like best oil arguement said it all! Nice thing about an A is, if the battery goes dead, you can always dig under the seat and get the crank out. Haven't been able to find the crank OR the hole to put it in on my modern F150...??!!
