Bendix spring shim

After reading a bunch of the threads on the older Bendix drives I see where some springs need a shim under the smaller of the screws.
Am I to assume this shim should be a thickness to hold the spring centered when the bolt is tightened?
And if the end bolt needs a shim, should this shim be a thickness to center the spring at the same time as it seats securely in the hole on the end of the starter shaft??
I'm building a spare drive.. So far I've never had starter probs.
Thanks,

From service bulletins page 571 (it's best to read the whole article starting on page 570---follow it and you won't have any trouble with the original drive)
"the purpose of the spring clip it to support the first one-quarter coil on each end of the driving spring and to prevent bending of the spring screws" ---followed by the proper method of fitting them

The only thing even close that I find is this "BENDIX DRIVE SPRING CLIP"
Is this what I need?
If not, what does this thing do?
Thanks for the replies.

It gives the last coil on the spring ends some support. Without the clip you can bend the bolts or make them come loose easier by the spring pulling at an angle.

Later springs have a reduced diameter on the last coil on each end. If your spring has the reduced diameter, then you don't need the clips.
