Bendix Problem?

I took the starter out (starter rotates but doesn't engage) and it looks good, everything looks free and not gummed up. As you can see the drive gear is a little chipped, could that cause the problem? The fly wheel looks good.

The slightly chipped gears would not be the problem. The Bendix depends on momentum and free movement. Does it rotate freely? Try running the starter on the bench to see if the Bendix moves correctly. If the starter does not spin up quickly the Bendix will not engage. That could be caused by a starter problem, cable or connector problems, or a battery problem. But first see if it rotates freely.

Is the second bolt still in place? Can't see it in your picture. And,yes, wash the oil off everything and rinse it with brakleen. It should actually have a dry rattle when fooling with it on the bench.

When I took the starter out the bendex gear seemed to me to slide effortlessly. I did a bench check and the gear did not slide as it should so I used carb cleaner and wd 40 and it worked fine. I guess I didn't realize how clean it needed to be. How should I lube (Motor oil?) the gear and shaft before i reinstall it? The 2 bolts are being retained as designed. The bendix spring doesn't do anything. Is that proper when testing on the bench?

I always wanted to put a little something on the drives, but it always gummed up.It really is a dry environment, but dust is made in there.I put the drive in my truck dry in the early 80's,I have the starter out right now because I'm doing engine work. The drive is as shiny and rattly as when I put it in.It is getting new bolts,as both of them are bent.
