Bench testing coil

I can get the coil to buzz but it will not throw a spark of the top side contact ,are there any tricks to it ,thanks ,

Ted,
How are you testing it? With just a six volt battery? That isn't a good way to test them, especially for long runs as it will destroy the inner windings. The only way to properly test a coil is with an ohm meter first to check for internal shorts and a HCCT or a Strobo-Spark Coil Tester. Other methods may get you close, but without one of these tools you are only doing half of the adjustment.

Check the points. Make sure the cushion spring has that .005 clearence. No clearence will cause your problem. So will shorted windings. Personally I don't see a problem using a battery, 6 or 12 just don't keep the coil "on" for long periods. Short blasts. I use the AC output from a toy train transformer. Works great. By the way the spark comes from the bottom side contact. The top is ground from the timer. The single base contact is power.

It does work; sort of to use a battery, but you have no idea if it is double sparking or not. To achieve optimum performance, you need to verify whether it is double sparking or not.

I agree Farm. It's only good to see if they work. Like a buzz box. They must be HCCT'd or Strobo Sparked for max performance.
