bellhousing question

I have an 8BA engine that came out of a 49 F5 truck that had a 4 speed transmission. In addition to the 3" thick cast iron bellhousing there is a 1" thick cast iron spacer between the bellhousing and block. Is this spacer for a particular clutch or flywheel?

Anything on this engine look familiar?

That's because its a big truck trans. The pass car up to 48 has that as part of the trans case.Pickups after 48 perhaps also.I think you can use that if you're planning a T5 conversion.

The part you call a spacer is actually the standard Ford bellhousing. There's nothing special about that part. No special flywheel or clutch is needed the Ford flathead flywheel for your application was usually an 11 inch clutch. Ford flathead flywheels can be found with 9 and 10 inch clutch bolt patterns also.

I wonder if the OP is referring to what LOOKS like a 1” spacer between the bolt-on bell and block; if so, that is part of the block.

Not sure we're on the same - there is no spacer, there is about a 2.5 - 3.0" think bolt-on bell-housing (that the transmission is bolted up to). This bolts directly to the block. The back of the block casting does stick out about 1" from the back of the block (at the top). You may be thinking that there is a spacer - when it is actually a part of the block itself.

The above photo doesn't provide enough visual info. More detailed photos of the engine bellhousing and the transmission bolted to the bell housing would be helpful.

Try moving the horizontal bar at the bottom of your screen to see the rest of that HUGE pic. :)
