Bell Housing

I have cleaned my bell housing and painted it, but am kind of concerned about a rather large hole on the bottom. I understand that there is normally a small hole to allow oil to drip from the rear main, but at some point in my cars life someone has enlarged it, for whatever reason.

My question is... Is it okay to leave as is? Is there an advantage to this? (only ask because it was clearly cut open on purpose) Can I do a repair to it so that I can use the bell housing?

Thank you in advance for the help.

John I woiuld be more concerned about any lateral cracks around the mounts. It's a drain hole. I would use some JB Weld and put a large washer with the correct size hole so you can put in your cotter pin.

I've seen em that way. The hole was probably enlarged so that starter bendix bolts that fell off the starter could easily drop out the bottom. If you want a perfect show car, it won't do. I run one like that on a strip down and I never saw where it hurt a thing.
