Bearing Cap Missing Bolt?

I just removed the oil pan and pump on my '41. I noticed what looks like a missing bolt on the rear main bearing cap (see attached). Should there be a bolt in this hole?

Thanks

The earlie engine back in the 30's had a drain back pipe in the rear cap, the later one like your 40 has the threaded hole but left out the pipe. Don't worry about it. Walt

Walt, every '39 as well as every '40 engine I have rebuilt (lots of them) has had that drain pipe.

I Think if you look through the parts books you will find that it was there or not depending on which rear main seal system was used (rope or slinger)

If you install the return pipe make sure the threaded end does not screw in so far that it contacts the crank shaft! As mentioned it is not necessary but if you drive in an area with steep upward inclines it may be a good idea to have it so it can direct the oil returning to the oil pan away from the rear pan seal. This can help prevent an oil leak.

Exactly!

Bought these from Little Dearborn in Mpls MN . To add to Terry's info also make sure you do not screw it in far enough that it acts as a dam and causes a leak . I simply turn it in 5 turns and Loctite it .
